Correct! All there is, are these “simples” as you refer to them. All these things are just some base unit of matter in various configurations whose usefulness or relevance is relative to how we can navigate our spatial reality with said matter over time. This is one of the many reasons I believe in God- because for an intellectual to have realized any of this in the first place, that intellect/ consciousness must be moored from outside the simples from which it has perspective.

*Linguists have entered the chat* . In all seriousness, I’m not a linguist, but a lot of this is actually describing features/issues in the English language. Some languages don’t have adjectives (“the thing blues” vs “the blue thing”), some don’t have objects but rather states of being. Besides its ties with the severe decay of cultures associated with it, this is one reason why language death is so tragic. Entire worlds are lost when a language is forgotten.

When I'm asked about this stuff (ha), I tell people simply: "We make the universe." 👁 We make not live in a junky universe, but perhaps in a "munky" 🐒 universe. One interpreted from our perceptions, being the apes of separating stuff into things. It's useful, but is it accurate? One point I liked in this video: The journey to seek descriptions would have to include the fact that our languages include implied meaning. We often use (even in the sciences) descriptions in which "you know what I mean". It's useful, but is it accurate? A good point towards the end of this video is that of temporality. ⌚ We tend to categorize based on snapshots, as if motion didn't exist. It's useful, but is it accurate? Its cool to see all of the ontological theories start to blend, even in this video! 🔪 And another point that is worth responding to is that of nihilism and antirealism. Much like the idea of "meaning", we do seem to live in a universe devoid of meaning and objective descriptions. BUT, meaning and descriptions are still realities to us. "We are provide the light in the darkness". So to the absolutists either way, or to those in fear of nihilistic realities: It's okay, we can navigate this how we want. 😎

chairs, like everything else, are ideas. the "you" that exists independantly of its simples is an idea. A composer writes music, a symphony performs it. the symphony is made of the simples performing the peice, just like your simples are performing the you. and what is there, tangible, is form and function. ideas. pure simulation.

Hey VSauce! If I understood correctly: Simples exist, and they are arranged thing-ing, so we often think also "things" exist. In some physics that doesn't seem full exact. Light seems made up of photons which can behave both as particles and as waves: it depends on what they are interacting with. Relational interpretation of quantum mechanics suggests that ontologically nothing exists on its own, there aren't any a priori proprieties nor objects (simples). Only relations or interactions exist. As the chair and as ourselves, Simples (particles) aren't things, they are processes. It's like the bricks of nature don't exist, but the way they are arranged and interact does. I suggest you to read Carlo Rovelli's Helgoland, in which this nice professor with a solid background in quantum gravity (actually Loop Quantum Gravity) exposes this interesting ontological interpretation of quantum mechanics. After all, we are all materialists, so why not ask science about how the world is, or could be? PS: Thanks MIcheal for your work.
